Chapel hill oral surgery

Many babies are born with either tongue-ties or lip-ties, extra connective tissues that make it challenging to open and move their mouths like normal. When left unaddressed, these tissues can sometimes make it more difficult for children to breastfeed or eat as usual, causing nutritional deficiencies. There may also be long-term delays in speech development. Through a simple oral surgery known as the frenectomy, Dr. Hill can remove this excess tissue in children and adults to ensure you enjoy full oral function. At Chapel Hill Oral Surgery, we are dedicated to providing this essential procedure throughout the Chapel Hill, NC, area.

Frenectomy Explained

The term frenum refers to the small folds of connective, muscular tissue that prevent particular bodily organs from moving too far. Excess frenum in the tongue and lips is relatively common. Frenectomies are performed to remove these excess tissues and restore a healthy, normal range of motion. This procedure is often performed for pediatric patients, but adults with unaddressed frenum concerns can have a frenectomy too.

Labial Frenectomy

A labial frenum connects the center of the upper lip to just below the upper front teeth. When this frenum is overly long, it may contribute to an unhealthy gap between the front teeth or significant gum recession. In extreme cases, it may even inhibit the proper opening or sealing of the mouth, making breastfeeding and eating difficult.

Lingual Frenectomy

The lingual frenum connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth. A long or tight lingual frenum restricts the tongue’s movement and can cause speech or eating issues. People commonly refer to lingual frenum restrictions as a “tongue-tie.”

When Is Frenectomy Necessary?

Frenectomies are typically recommended and performed among babies, children of any age, and adults whenever a frenum prevents healthy eating or speaking. During an initial consultation, your oral surgeon can tell you more about your child’s eligibility for a frenectomy.

Procedure and Recovery Overview

The initial consultation is essential for confirming that the frenectomy is needed and scheduling the day of surgery. This appointment is also an excellent opportunity for parents to ask questions about the procedure and seek reassurance about safety, comfort, and aftercare.

Frenectomies are usually extremely quick, taking just a few minutes, and are often performed with laser ablation technology to minimize discomfort, pain, bleeding, or swelling. Dr. Hill and our on-site anesthesia team will promote your child’s comfort and safety throughout their frenectomy by following proven and advanced techniques. When the procedure is over, we will send you and your child home with a complete set of aftercare instructions to follow.
